Description

Built by Théophile Seyrig, a former business partner of Gustave Eiffel, between 1881 and 1886, the Dom Luís I Bridge spans the 172 m (564 ft) from Porto to the city of Villa Nova de Gaia. This iron arch bridge is an impressive sight, especially when rabelo boats are moored beneath it. These traditional cargo boats, found solely on the Douro River, were historically used to transport wine from the valley to the city before the railway was built.
