In Lazio, halfway between Rome and Naples, lies the village of Sperlonga, in the province of Latina, with its white houses, alleys, and stairways that make this area so distinctive. Sperlonga is in a unique setting, perched on a promontory overlooking the sea. Its location, combined with the beauty and medieval style architecture of the village full of towers, have entered the town into the circuit of the Borghi più Belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy). Places to see include the National Archaeological Museum, which overlooks the beach and houses a "Marble Odyssey", and the Cave of Tiberius, a cave carved into a Roman villa which is said to have belonged to the emperor. Recently the protected area of the Natural Monument of Sperlonga, Villa Tiberio Promontory, and Costa Torre Capovento-Punta Cetarola was established as a testament to the cultural and environmental importance of the area. WWF also manages the Blue Oasis, near the Villa of Tiberius.
