Description

Since St. Peter’s monastery was founded in the 7th century, the church and abbey have been the spiritual heart of the city of Salzburg. Aside from its striking Christian architecture, the cemetery and catacombs are also a must-see for fans of “The Sound of Music”.he Abbey is located on the bottom of a hill, the Mönchsberg, in the middle of Salzburg. Benedictine monks still live and work here, so only a small part of the site is open to the public. Standing above the castle gives you a very good impression of the size of the complex. The monastery garden with its arcades and cloisters is framed by the three brighter buildings. Hidden by trees, by the church with the green roof, is the entrance to the cemetery of St. Peter Abbey. The main courtyard of the monastery is characterized by a prominent fountain. St. Peter stands on a column in the middle. The courtyard leads to other monastic institutions: the Franciscan church, the monastery entrance, the monastery church, and, in the south-east corner, the entrance to the cemetery of St. Peter. The monastery can only be visited on request. But it is possible to visit the cemetery and the catacombs.
