Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) is a shallow salt lake in the southwest of the altiplano of Bolivia, within Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and close to the border with Chile. The lake is actually home to a particular species of red algae. Along with a whole lot of red sediment that gets pulled up from the bottom, it’s this algae that stains the water its lurid, horror movie color. The mechanism is similar to the one that powers the similarly beautiful Cano Cristales in Colombia, but instead of blooming only once every 12 months, Laguna Colorada is bright red year-round.
