Description

Lopez Island is the third largest island in the San Juan Islands.Compared to its larger neighbors Orcas Island and San Juan Island, Lopez has a more bucolic charm. It is relatively flat and most of it remains quite undeveloped. This is a conscious decision by local residents, who prefer a rural lifestyle.Lopez is nestled in an archipelago of more than 172 islands. The island is 10.5 miles long and 4 miles wide and has 56 miles of shoreline. Nature is still intact here. Country roads wind through forest and pastureland and offer vistas of quiet bays and driftwood-covered beaches. Eagle, hawk and deer sightings are frequent. With a mild climate and an average rainfall of 19 to 25 inches per year, Lopez Island is located in the banana belt of Washington. Summer weather settles in the 70s and winters run between 40 – 50 degrees. Lopez Village offers islanders a choice of restaurants, a library, bakery, bookstore, galleries and coffee shops. There is also a full service grocery, winery, medical clinic and pharmacy as well as several marinas, hardware store, gas station and schools nearby. The population of 2300 year-round residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle attuned to the seasons.
