Description

The municipality of Moena is located between the Dolomites at an altitude between 1,094 and 2,823 meters above sea level, while the municipal capital is located at 1,184 meters above sea level, crowned by the Dolomites of Catinaccio (Roda de Vael), Monzoni (Cima Vallaccia, Sas da Pesmeda) and Latemar (Monte Toac, Sas da Ciamp). To the south it is dominated by the wooded mass of Sas da Mezodì, in the group of Viezzena. The municipality includes the whole Avisio basin between the hamlet of Pezzé, upstream (Rif dal Termen, the ancient border between the bishop's principalities of Trento and Bressanone), up to the narrow valley between Forno and Mezzavalle (hamlet of the municipality of Predazzo); However, the upper part of the Rif de Costalongia valley (divided between the municipalities of Soraga and Vigo di Fassa) and most of the orographic right of the Valsorda (municipality of Predazzo) are excluded, while the large area of Lusia-Bocche, beyond the watershed of the homonymous chain, in Val Travignolo, belongs to the Moenese area. The eastern end of the municipality, beyond the San Pellegrino Pass watershed, falls within the Piave basin and is washed by the Biois stream. The capital is located at the geographical base of the Val di Fassa, before the Avisio stream channels into the long stretch of valley that leads to the Val di Fiemme; right in the village, the stream receives the waters of the Rio San Pellegrino and the Rio Costalunga, which descend from the homonymous passes.
