Description

The Rhune or Larrun in Basque, is a peak of 905 m above sea level located in the Basque Country. Empress Eugenia, wife of Napoleon III, started the fashion of mountain hiking while staying in Biarritz. The Rhune became a popular tourist destination in 1924, when the cogwheel railway was built. In the village of Sara, 10 km from San Juan de Luz, this authentic collection of rack and pinion trains, dating from 1924, will take you in about 35 minutes to 905 meters above sea level on the mythical peak of the Pyrenees. Pico Larrun is the first peak in the Pyrenees and dominates the Basque coast. It is one of the most beautiful views in Spain. During the ascent, you will discover the specific flora and fauna of the Basque mountain. This massif is populated by Pottokas, robust typical Basque ponies that live here in total freedom, redheaded sheep and wild vulture, the emblematic raptor of the Pyrenees.
