Description

At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, Brasov is one of the best side trips from Bucharest because it’s one of Transylvania’s most interesting and atmospheric cities.

With a history dating back to the 13th century, the city is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming atmosphere. Here is a more detailed description of Brasov:

  1. Old Town (Centrul Vechi): The Old Town of Brasov is the bustling heart of the city and a major attraction for visitors. The Council Square (Piata Sfatului) is the main landmark, surrounded by historic buildings including the Council House (Casa Sfatului) and the Black Church (Biserica Neagra), Romania's largest Gothic church. The square is also lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

  2. Brasov Fortress (Cetatea Brasovului): Above the city stands the Brasov Fortress, a fortified citadel that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The fortification was built in the 15th century and served as an important defense point for the city. Today, the Brasov Fortress is open to visitors and also houses a panoramic restaurant.

  3. Black Church (Biserica Neagra): The Black Church is one of Brasov's most famous attractions. Built in the 14th century, it gets its name from the fire that damaged it in the 17th century, leaving its walls blackened. The church is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, with a spectacular interior housing an ancient organ and a rich collection of Oriental carpets.

  4. Rope Street (Strada Sforii): This narrow medieval street is considered one of the narrowest streets in Europe. It measures only 1.32 meters in width and winds its way through Brasov's Old Town. Today, Rope Street is a popular tourist destination, with colorful houses and a charming atmosphere.

  5. Mount Tampa: Overlooking the city is Mount Tampa, a hill that offers stunning views of Brasov. It can be reached on foot or by cable car, and at the top, there is a large metal letter "B," a symbol of Brasov.

  6. Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei): This is one of the gateways to Brasov's Old Town. Built in 1559, Catherine's Gate is an imposing fortified structure that was part of the city's ancient defensive walls. Today, the gate houses the Brasov History Museum.

  7. Weaver's Bastion (Bastionul Ţesătorilor): Located near the Council Square, the Weaver's Bastion is another point of interest to visit. Built in the 15th century, it was used as a defensive tower and is now home to the Weaver's Bastion Museum, which showcases the historical importance of the textile industry to Brasov.

These are just some of the highlights to explore in Brasov. The city also offers a variety of cafes, restaurants, shops, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes it a highly regarded tourist destination.

Begin your visit in the city’s main square of Piaţa Sfatului, home to some really pretty baroque buildings, including the city’s former town hall.

From there, walk over to the imposing and Gothic Black Church, exactly the kind of landmark you’d imagine is in Transylvania. Continue to explore the historic center of the city, taking in the medieval walls and various towers which once protected Brasov.

Brasov is also a great base for exploring other Transylvanian attractions, such as Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress.
