Description

Located in the old texture of the city, Zanjan Bazaar is considered the longest bazaar in Iran that has expanded towards the west and east. The bazaar is divided into two parts: upper bazaar and lower bazaar. Historical records show construction of the bazaar began during the reign of Agha Mohammad Khan (1742-1797) and was completed during the reign of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar (1772–1834). The bazaar was expanded during later periods to include several caravanserais, bathhouses, mosques and …. The bazaar includes eight sub-bazaars where shoemakers, tailors, goldsmiths, textile merchants and… sold their goods and provided services to the public. Haj Karbalayi Ali and Haj Ali Qoli are two of the most famous caravanserais in this complex which played an important role in local trade. The number of sub-bazaars and the diversity of merchants who occupied them, the number of mosques, caravanserais and bathhouses in Zanjan Bazaar indicate that this market was once the heart of the city’s economy. This bazaar, which has brickwork and tilework decorations with Qajar era (1785-1925) motifs and colors, was registered as a National Heritage Site in 1995.
